When I needed to re-purpose a laundry room as a half bath, I needed to get rid of my tank water heater. Following the vent upstairs I mounted the unit in an upstairs bed room. 8 inches recessed into the wall, leaving 3 inches in the room. Now I have unlimited hot water, which it is very easy to change the temperature of. I freed up almost all the room the old water heater used and no one sleeping in the room has been woken up during use. The 4 inch vent uses the same enlarged hole the old 3 inch vent used.

This was purchased and installed by a Rinnai backed plumbing Company and placed in our enclosed garage. After 11 months we threw in the towel on this unit. It works very well with one major drawback. It is so loud when being operated it had left one room unusable and sounded like a race car was revving up in the house. The neighbors could hear it across the street. It is that loud. Hot water while risking your hearing wasn't worth it. Love the premise of constant hot water but not at the price of our hearing. Rinnai customer service was just awful. They spent 6 months "working on a solution" only to come back and say they had second thoughts and didn't believe there was a problem. So if you install this and it sounds like a tractor pull in your house the folks at Rinnai think this is normal. Yikes! Run, don't walk from this unit.

I aslo have this product installed, although im a licensed plumber and did installation myself but it shouldn't be any different if your unit was installed by a pro. I absolutely love the unit, i have to say that im very picky and hard to please kind of guy and I dont have any of the problems this unit giving to the other guy, preformance is unbelivable to this day i wonder how this little guy seems to keep up with up to 5 running units at the same time. Noise wise its probably as quite as working refriferator if not quiater but dont forget the unit is in the garage so u never ever hear it kick on unless u standing next to it, I hope this review helps,

Installed this unit recently to convert from a tank to tankless water heater system.

The unit came packed in an amazon box that was way to big for the original manufacturer's box inside. this allowed the original box to slide all over during shipment and upon delivery the package looked "roughed-up" When i removed this outer "amazon" box the manufacturer box was still in tact and in perfect condition. Opening up the packaging, everything was in place and protected with styrofoam, accesories were all accounted for and nothing was missing.

I opened the front panel of the unit to check what was inside and found everything well fastened and fitted well for the unit's size. I also wanted to see what they were using as a thermal protection from freezing as this unit is supposed to protect down to -30. i saw lots of little ceramic heaters placed all around the water pipes in and out of the heat exchanger fastened with a durable-looking metal clip. all the remaining wiring was tied off to the side and everything looked very clean and professionally done.

I installed this unit as per local codes and the instructions. The unit was easy to install (after all of my plumbing modifications to accept the unit) and the unit started right up the first time with no problems at all.

some things i noticed upon start-up is the lack of noise, this unit is VERY quiet. i expected to hear when the unit powered up and expected exhaust and steam to be flying out of the exhaust vent on the front of the unit. I got neither of these symptoms. the unit is barely audible, and the flue gasses and steam gently float out of the front of the unit.

The control panel seems a bit cheap. by this i simply mean that it feels super light and just has a cheap feel (not sure if i can really explain what cheap feels like but some people will know exactly what i mean) but, this did not affect performance thus far and the panel started right up with the unit as well and is functioning properly. the unit came pre-set to 120 degree water temperature. This was pretty accurate as i measured 112.6 at the furthest faucet (about a 35-40 foot run in a semi-heated crawlspace during winter) with a digital gauge. The temperature drop at this faucet is not the fault of the heater as this faucet pipe crosses into a "cold" section of crawlspace before going through the floor into the kitchen. another faucet at about 30 feet reads 121.3 degree water.

this unit has so far operated flawlessly without having to do anything at all to "make it work". i turn on the hot water tap and it delivers. I have not yet seen any condensation buildup on the outdoor walls near the unit but we have only been using it a few days and the outside temperature has been fluctuating above and below freezing. if i run into any problems related to outdoor weather and/or freezing temps i will follow-up on this review. so far i am happy with the price paid for this unit as it was about the same as a 50 gallon tank heater i was considering.

I bought it and installed it. If you set the temperature above 120F, it produces yellow water at the start (!) [I think that's because if you set it to 130F, it spikes to 140+ initially].
Called eccotemp and emailed them; they said that 120F was the maximum temperature for this unit (despite the manual saying 140F) and any more would cause burns.

True, but:
1. I know how to use the cold water to mix it to the temperature I want (it's called tempering!).
2. This is a "whole house" unit -- I prefer to sterilize my dishes and laundry. 120F doesn't do that (heck, 120F barely kills fleas!)

Keeping it despite the yellow water... I suppose that means it will wear out faster than normal and I get to find out what how the warranty works.

Other than the low temp, it works, and I've seen a reduction on my gas bill *despite* me filling my hot tub with the water (Yay! I got to enjoy the hot tub without waiting for a day for it to heat up on it's own after having to drain it).

BTW, it was beutifully easy to install. Worst part was running an outside gas line, but I wanted to do that for a grill anyway.

Installing a Tankless Hot Water heater like this unit is not for the faint of heart, or the casual DIYer. I bought this unit to replace a 50 gallon conventional hot water heater in a 1-family house with 2 showers, a full bathroom, dishwasher, and washing machine, that all require hot water. On the gas side, I have a dryer, hot water furnace, one stove, and this new Water Heater. The old water heater shared the same chimney duct with my furnace.
After I purchased and received delivery of this unit, I spent the time reading up on the installation as per the manufacturer and was surprised at all the warnings and restrictions on how to install it. Had I studied the manual and done the research beforehand, I might have hesitated to dive into this project instead of doing a much simpler "replace-in-kind" conventional water heater. In the end, I'm happy with this installation and the huge amount of space I regained in my Boiler/ Laundry Room without a 50 gallon tank occupying space.
Two most critical aspects that you need to look at prior to installing one of these in an existing home:
1. Relocate the ventilation piping for this heater. Manufacturer is very specific that you cannot pipe this heater into your existing flue duct and chimney. The reason is that the vent piping is actually two pipes in one (a 3-inch stainless steel pipe for flue gas centered in a 5-inch vent pipe for fresh air intake). The fresh air gets heated up by the heat of the exhaust gas as it travels within the 5-inch pipe into the heater's combustion chamber.
2. The gas service and line might need to be upgraded. My old HW Tank used a ½-inch gas line. The new HW Heater requires a ¾-inch line. The old heater needed roughly 40,000 btu while the tankless unit uses as much as 200,000 btu. A rough calculation based on my gas meter size and the total BTU's of all my gas appliances indicates that my service might not be enough if everything was running at the same time. The jury is still out on this but so far everything is working well with me.
Other aspects that you will need to be aware of:
1. There is a blower motor inside. It makes a soft humming noise when the heater turns on but I can't hear it upstairs.
2. Because there's a motor and electronic control in the unit, the heater requires 110 VAC. The old HW heater would still work even in a blackout.
3. Hot and Cold water piping enters the heater at the bottom as opposed to the top for my old heater. That meant that I had to do a lot of new copper piping and sweating.
4. Because the unit is wall mounted I had to do some preliminary construction work prior to the actual heater installation...wood framing (my laundry/ boiler room is unfinished), extending 110 volt service with a switch, and drilling a 6-inch hole through brick and wood.
5. After looking at the ventilation requirements, I had to shop for the special 3x5 vent piping through the Internet because no local plumbers carried this kind of piping. This delayed project start-up for several weeks but it gave me time to really think about where I needed to install all the vent piping, gas line, copper tubing, and wall placement. It also gave me some time to think about whether or not I really wanted to do this project or return the whole thing to Amazon. I couldn't resist the challenge and I liked the idea of reclaiming my floor space.
6. The vent piping in the back of my house is about 2 feet off the ground and sticks out like a jet engine exhaust pipe by about 8 inches so it's a little bit of an eyesore. I'm thinking about planting some shrubs to cover up the protruding pipe.
7. The Heater has been in service now for two days, and I'm starting to realize that I might want to slightly change my water usage habits. If I want to use warm water to wash my hands, the heater kicks in but I won't feel hot water because I only have the faucet on for a few seconds. If I want maximize heater efficiency and minimize total energy consumption, then either I let the water run until I feel the hot water, or I use only cold water. The wife is happy when she draws a bath since she's pulling hot water for an extended period of time instead of a few seconds.
It took me 4 hours to drill holes and install the vent piping through the side of my house in the backyard. It took another 8 hours to do the plumbing work. Framing and electrical lines were previously completed.
Right now, I give this unit 3 stars because I'm not sure how well it's performing yet, and because of the difficulty in getting it installed as per manufacturer requirements.
I will add more comments as this unit gets some service time and I can compile all the costs involved with this installation.

My traditional tank heater was on its last leg, and I knew it would need to be replaced. I had been looking into tankless models for while. After considering multiple brands with comparable maximum flow rates, I bought the Rheem RTG-95DVN. Key reasons I settled on this model? It had among the lowest minimum activation flow rates, which seems to prevent the so-called cold water sandwich I've heard people complain about. I've done everything I can think of to force this "cold sandwich" to happen, and it just won't seem to happen with this particular tankless model, which is just fine by me. Also, this model does not require the expensive adapter almost all other models require to connect the unit to the stainless steel concentric vent piping.

Installation costs aside, I love this new water heater. For good measure, I had the installer set the thermostat at 130 (10 degrees above the factory setting). For the first time in a long time I do not have to worry about running out of hot water. The water is more than hot enough, even with at least one major appliance pulling hot water at the same time the shower is going. We have not yet exceeded its ability to produce hot water for multiple outlets.

And yes, I also love having the extra room for storage that the traditional hot water heater occupied.

UPDATE - It is now mid-summer in the very hot South. I've been able to reduce the thermostat on my wonderful tankless water heater to 104 for the summer months since the municipal water supply is surface water. The Rheem RTG-95DVN continues to work very well. A very important point to keeping your gas bills low - given the low minimum activation flow rate, keep the tap all the way on cold if you have single-lever taps. Otherwise, the tank will activate every time you turn on the water, unnecessarily raising your gas bill. I figured that out during the first couple of months of owning this water heater.

I was debating on this size or the one size smaller. I made the right choice. All though it does take a 40 amp breaker and number 8 wire ( same specs as conventional electrical stove in most homes), which is a fairly good load, the hot water is instant and plentiful. We have a 1 inch incoming line and plenty of pressure, reduced down to 1/2" within a foot of the heater. The flow through the unit is a lot and with the t-stat turned to full the water is plenty warm. It doesn't take much of a flow to trip the unit on.
We had tried a smaller unit at another location and we had to control the water flow to get substantial 'warm' water.
