Ideas For Your Home Plumbing

Plumbing projects can get messy from time to time. Whether you are upgrading an appliance or fixture, installing new plumbing, or repairing old plumbing, it is important that you research what your options are and prepare for a plumber. If you are in need of a repair there are tricks to solving the problem without having to call in a plumber. And if you do have to call in a plumber it is important that you carefully select one.

Plumbing consists of the pipes and fixtures for the distribution of water or gas in your house. Some of the most common and not so common types of plumbing appliances and fixtures include lavatory sinks, pedestal sinks, utility sinks, a shower/bath, a toilet, a whirlpool, a steam shower, a tankless water heater, solar water heaters and a septic tank. In addition to these fixtures and appliances, you may want to consider the following ideas for your next plumbing project:

Freeze protection for your pipes.
Insulated pipes.
Insulated water heater.
A circulating hot water pump.

Often times a plumbing problem arises in your home, such as a drain problem, a leaky faucet, or a faulty fixture that needs replacement. Many homeowners instinctually call a plumber before taking the time to think about the ways in which the problem could be solved without spending so much money. For example, if you have been wasting money on an annual drain-clearing procedure then you may want to stop for a second and think about what the cause of the problem is. Simple cost effective solutions can be used on almost all plumbing issues. Make sure to review the problem, search for the cause and try attacking the source on your own before calling in an expensive plumber.

In addition, you may be able to save yourself some pennies by purchasing your own plumbing fixtures. Often times you end up paying more for a fixture if you purchase one from your plumber. This is mainly because plumbers sell you toilets, sinks, and faucets that they get at a discount and charge you full price for. The rack up in price is meant to cover the costs of dealing with purchases, returns, and storage. Fortunately, home center stores are now charging you prices that are even lower than the contractor prices that plumbers pay their suppliers. It never hurts to shop around at your home center first because you might just catch yourself a deal.

If and when you do decide to hire a plumber, be careful doing so. Hiring a plumber is very similar to purchasing a car. In both situations, it isn't wise to go to the yellow pages and choose a dealership/plumber at random. You never know what you are going to get that way. It is best to shop around and get at least three price quotes. The best advice to offer when it comes to hiring a plumber is to do your research and find a qualified plumber who can suit your needs the best.

2 Harpiris Energys Suncache: Solar Water Heater made of Plastic buildaroo.comEric from Harpiris Energy tells us about their Suncache product which is a passive solar water heating system made out of plastic. With $2M in grant funding from the Department of Energy, Harpiris Energy brought their Suncache product to the market. The units have been shipping for about a year.

Harpiris Energy just finished installation in two apartment complexes in Sacramento, and they are looking forward to another project in Hanford. This is a passive system where there is no electricity being generating. The cold city water enters the collector when someone turns on the faucet and moves through the copper piping. Subsequently, it extracts heat from the 50 gallons that are held in the unit. Finally, the water enters whatever kind of heating system one uses in their home whether it is a tankless or a conventional water heater.

The Suncache is cheaper and lighter than conventional solar thermal units because the Suncache is made out of plastic. The unit is sent in one big box with all the elements needed to install it. There was a bill passed in California not too long ago to incentivize solar water heaters; the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) just released a draft proposal that is $275M dollars over the next 8 years, includes $35M for marketing. There may potentially be rebates for those installing solar water heaters.

Cost savings: Versus a natural gas system, one can expect to save $150 dollars a year. Compared electric water heaters, one may save $1000 dollars a year. The Suncache costs $2,000 dollars, and with installation, it is about $3,500.

At Harpiris they expect that the solar water heating market is expected to grow tremendously in the next few years due to new incentives in states like California. They are currently looking to recruit new dealers to help them handle the increased demand.

Insider Going Green Energy Tips

Step one is to hire an energy auditor. We need to turn to the experts, to people who are best at it when we need something done. They could tell you about what is making you poorer by heating and cooling your home as well as other areas.

If you are not sure where they are located then just run a google search. Perhaps you might consider looking up the yellow pages otherwise. These guys have got some high-tech tools which include infrared cameras, pressurizing fans, moisture meters and smoke blowers (or pencils).

He might even get a brand new house fan fitted to the outside doorway. It creates pressure, holding out a smoke pencil could help you understanding where you are becoming poorer. He might want to use a moisture meter to figure out extra moist places of your house. High RH or Relative Humidity can make a home's inhabitants feel uncomfortable and add to high energy costs.

Second step is to find effective solutions. I have got a problem. You have found a guy to investigate it. Now is the time to fix it. Mostly he is going to suggest solutions. Sometimes you might be able to fix it yourself or at times you might need those experts to do it for you. It may be as simple as caulking gaps on the exterior of the homes siding with a good silicone sealant and adding insulative foam electric outlet sealers to go behind your home's electrical outlet switch plates with plug in outlet covers to reduce drafts and air loss.

Other more extensive energy saving features may aid in lowering fuel costs as well. Among these are adding attic insulation, Low E glass windows, high SEER HVAC system (13 or better), tankless water heater and Energy Star appliances.

Couple example cases, this place had absolutely no insulation in the walls, though it did have a little insulation at the attic. On pier and beam with hardwood floors, there was no insulation underneath the home as well. On acting on the experts suggestion, believe it or not, the gas and electricity bills dropped down. It's a perfect way to check your energy efficiency.

This expert is going to help you determine how to modify your house into an energy effective place which conserves energy. She conducted another audit on this one model 2 story with zoned HVAC. There was one heater and an aircon unit at all levels. At this audit, she learned more about the way air flow works. Apparently if you leave the bedroom doors open, then the HVAC is going to work better. So if you get an expert, he is going to help you modify older homes in energy effective, even though they weren't meant to be that way.
